This website will explain the concepts, terminologies and also provide sample calculations with references wherever possible.
When we start to explore literature and internet on this topic, there are so many resources to look at that it becomes quite cumbersome and complex. There are different schools of thoughts and differences of opinion even among them. For some reason or the other, even in todays day and age, there are sometimes differences of opinion even on the most basic of concepts like nisaab criteria, savings instruments like pension funds etc.
I have often found myself without definitive or even workable answers to some questions that are so necessary to calculate zakat and disburse it to genuine people and towards genuine causes. In such a situation, most of us then work out a zakat amount that is ad hoc and approximate; factoring in some assets and ignoring the others.
So my endeavour is to look out for practical answers and find workable solutions for Zakaat calculation so that an average person and reader is able to easily calculate his/her zakaat, and feel confident and assured that he/she has got the fundamentals right.
My approach of doing this would be to study and analyze all aspects of the topic/subtopic/issue and the various opinions/interpretations on it and then select/find out the most suitable analysis/interpretation. This approach, in my view, has twofold benefit; one being that we are able to pick and choose the most practicable solution, and two, in thoroughly studying a topic, we stand on a ground from where we can aim to attain further ethical and technical rigor.
This approach, therefore, inherently states and acknowledges that the jurisprudence, science and the math of ‘Zakaat’ is a work in progress, just like any other modern economic and financial instrument. This is important to state here because I have often found people stuck on finding the absolute truth and the best solution at the very first step and refusing to listen to and adjust and cooperate with different schools of thought and differing opinions, with the result being that people are perpetually stuck on step one.
One method or advise to remedy this uncooperative and unadjusting attitude and mindset is that apart from seeing ‘Zakaat’ as a religious, ethical and moral imperative, we also start to see ‘Zakaat’ as an economic, financial and technical instrument that has to respond to the changing environment.
So, Welcome and let’s start Learning and Simplifying !!!!!
